Mahakumbh 2025, commencing today in Prayagraj and running until February, is regarded as the world’s largest human gathering. According to the Uttar Pradesh government, approximately 400 million people are expected to attend the event. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has estimated that this Mahakumbh will generate trade exceeding ₹2 lakh crore.
Shri Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General of CAIT and Member of Parliament from Chandni Chowk, Delhi, stated that this event is poised to become the largest hub of religious economy, not only in India but globally. It is expected to significantly boost trade in Prayagraj and surrounding regions. Additionally, sectors such as railways, air transport, and roadways are projected to earn substantial revenues. He highlighted that, as Delhi is India’s largest trade distribution center, goods and services worth approximately ₹40,000 crore are anticipated to be supplied from Delhi to Prayagraj and nearby towns.
Mr. Khandelwal added that Mahakumbh will witness large-scale economic and trade activities. An estimate suggests that with an average expenditure of ₹5,000 per person during religious travel, the total spending will exceed ₹2 lakh crore. This includes spending on hotels, guesthouses, temporary accommodations, food, religious items, healthcare, and other services.
Key Trade Estimates of Mahakumbh 2025
1. Accommodation and Tourism
• Local hotels, guesthouses, and temporary lodging arrangements are expected to generate ₹40,000 crore in trade.
2. Food and Beverages
• Packaged foods, water, biscuits, juices, and meals will likely contribute ₹20,000 crore to the economy.
3. Religious Items and Offerings
• Items like oil, lamps, Ganga water, idols, incense sticks, and religious books are estimated to yield ₹20,000 crore in trade.
4. Transportation and Logistics
• Local and interstate transportation, freight services, and taxis could contribute ₹10,000 crore.
5. Tourism Services
• Tour guides, travel packages, and related services are expected to add ₹10,000 crore.
6. Handicrafts and Souvenirs
• Sales of local crafts, clothing, jewelry, and souvenirs are projected at ₹5,000 crore.
7. Healthcare Services
• Temporary medical camps, Ayurvedic products, and medicines are expected to generate ₹3,000 crore.
8. IT and Digital Services
• E-ticketing, digital payments, Wi-Fi services, and mobile charging stations may see a business of ₹1,000 crore.
9. Entertainment and Media
• Advertising, promotional activities, and media-related services are likely to result in ₹10,000 crore of trade.
